Haircut for Cat??

My persian kitten has beautiful long soft grey hair but it really seems to be too long. I groom him and try and wash him every couple of weeks or so, think bundle of teeth and claws and you'll get the picture, but I've never seen a cat with such long hair.

Should he/could he get a trim?

you can trim him but Persians are supposed to have long fur. just make sure you brush him regularly.

If you want him groomed it needs to be done by a professional - preferably a vet who does also does cat grooming.

I would say that its cruel to do it, but if its for the cats own health and safety then it has to be done, but i recommend taking it to a reputable place to have it done properly.

Most groomers will clip cats, those that need sedation may need to be done at an animal hospital that has a groomer. Please, I repeat PLEASE do not try to groom your own cat. All I see is huge gapping wounds from "I was just trying to do a little trimming here and there." Let a professional do their job, it's for the safety of the kitty.

Lmao - this reminds me of a family I stayed with. They had this huge Siamese/Persian tom that they had clipped. A ruff was left around his head, and a poofball on end of tail, and his paws were left alone and the rest of his body clipped down close like a buzzcut. He looked like a tiny lion. I thought it was funny and cute, but I could tell the cat felt like a total dork for weeks after he got sheared.

i knew someone who cut their cats hair, poor thing looked ridiculous, but, bet he was cooler in the summer time, that's why she did it.

and i have a cat, and he has been to the vet a billion times, and when they give him an i.v. they shave his leg

in both instances there hair grows back fine.

so unless you are groomer, or feel as if you can do it with out making him look silly, WHY NOT?

It is definately NOT cruel to have a cat's fur trimmed. We do it in the summertime because if we don't, he just lies around and is miserable. Take him to the groomer.

And I don't understand why a Persian is "supposed" to have long hair. By this logic, so are we!

i had a cat with really long hair and every summer i would shave him down to almost the skin everything but the head end of tail and feet haha he looked soo funny all summer haha but he would get way way to hot in the summer and really matted because he was an outdoor cat i would just give ur persian a little trim bring him to the groomer once every 3 weeks and they will trim and groom the cat for u otherwise because its a kitten its hair will become a little more silky and u wont have this problem

I have a Maine Coon with a really thick undercoat. I have him trimmed at least twice a year to make him more comfortable and to make it easier on me to groom. Make sure you find a groomer that is willing to trim a cat. Some of them won't.

hehe i have a long haired myself, and so do a few of my friends. Bringing your pet to the local groomer for a trim will do him no harm and probably make him a alittle more handsome. And if REALLY wanted to, do what my friends do. make him alittle lion haha. She shaves her cat, except for his tail, his paws, and his head. Of course...I dont reccomend this during the cold months...^_^

So yes, it is possible to give a cat a trim...but if you want him to keep looking pretty, i suggest you take him to a proffessional groomer in your area.

I used to like and have my long haired cat groomed. When they finished with him he looked so cute. The left his mane on and the rest of him was trimmed down. He loved the way he looked and all the extra attention of people petting him. The fur underneath was so soft that when he was shaved it felt like cashmere. Call a few different pet grooming places I know that all of them don't do cats but there are still a large number that do. Good luck and I bet you love the look and how easy it is to clean up. I used to have hair balls the size of tumbleweeds blowing around an hour after I had vacuumed. After that cat passed away I invested in a Cornish Rex, which equals no muss and no fuss.

~I don't see a problem with getting your cat's fur trimmed, even if "that's the way they're supposed to be." Our cats fur is long around his face, like a lion, and we trim it because he couldn't clean himself.

If you aren't very steady, you would want to take your kitty to the vet.

A word of caution, my mom used to trim her poodle's fur because it always matted up. She ended up cutting him with scissors so bad, by the time I saw him, it was too late for stitches. He had a wide open wound. Not very smart of her, I know.

They sell clippers, I'm sure you would want the silent type.

i have a persian. i brush him about every two days. i do cut around his butt so it doesn't get gross when he goes to the bathroom...and under his chin so he doesn't have hair in his mouth all the time. he hates it but...like everyone says, they are supposed to have long hair! there really would be no reason to get his hair cut unless you aren't able to manage it. it's apart of taking care of your animal.

You can try to give your cat a hair cut. Cats hair grows so fast you'll be doing it every day about.

If u cut your cat's hair it'll keep getting longer and longer.. just leave it be because cats don't Even like when their hair gets cut it makes them sad:(

I saw some new grooming tool in PetSmart a few days ago. I think it was like one of those trimmers you use to keep people's hair short, without going to the barber often. As long as it's not electric and making a scary noise it might work. Probably your best bet is going to a groomer. Be nice now. Please do not have the groomer make your kitty look like a minature lion or a poodle!
