Ten Year old Tortoiseshell Female Cat - Heavy Moulting ...?

... of short fine grey downy hair for several weeks. Despite being brushed daily it just keeps on shedding and gets absolutely everywhere - floating in the air getting in my eyes, up my nose, irritating my throat. Her main (coloured) coat is also shedding (though her coat doesn't appear to getting appreciably thinner) but this fine grey hair is by far the worst. I've had her since being a kitten and this is not an annual event as you may expect - I've had cats for over 30 years and this is a new problem for me. I'm dealing with it by confining her to one room, and she also goes out into the garden daily. She is a very affectionate cat and loves to be handled - but its just not possible with this problem. Consequently, she just lays in her basket sulking. I appreciate that a visit to the vet is indicated - just wonder if any of you 'cat people' have similar experiences.

I have a tortoiseshell myself. She sheds but not to the degree that you are describing, it sounds as if you need to take your cat to the vet. There could be another problem. She is definitely not happy.

Just keep brushing and hoovering

I know its expensive but you need to get her to the vet. She may have some sort of cancer or leukemia. There also may be something in the garden that she's allergic to, which is what it sounds like - an allergy. You have to take her in, she's miserable and you're miserable.

It's that time of the year I'm afraid. your cat is shedding it's summer coat, ready to get her winter coat. Some cat's moult heavier than others, you just have to keep brushing her.
