Why won't my hair hold colour?

I'm blonde, but as I get older I'm going more mousey brown (with a hint of ginger. . .the less said about that the better). Anyway, if I dye my hair blonde, it's fine and holds really well. If I try and go darker or any other colour, it just washes out, even if I use permanent colour. After one or two washes it just goes a kind of grey-ish colour, then back to my usual blonde. I've never tried to go darker proffesionally, only diy kits.

I also had a perm done a few years ago and that also dropped straight out. I went back and she did it again, really tight and again, it didn't last more than 48 hours!!!

My hair is in lovely condition. It's really silky and well looked after, I rarely blow dry or straighten it as it's naturally straight anyway.

Anyone know why this is and what I can do to make the colour hold?

You should get it professionally dyed at least once so that they can assess the condition of your hair and see if something needs to be done to improve color hold.

Also, make sure that you are not washing your hair too soon after dying it.

As for the perm, my hair doesn't hold perms, either. I got the 80s layered perm back in the day and lost it in a week. I have really thick hair so curl just doesn't work for me.

Maybe it's a chemical imbalance. Have you asked a professional? I think that there is a product that grabs the color and inbeds it in the hair strand.

if your hair is too light and its hard for darker hard to hold especially if you used to bleach it because all of your hair pigment is gone..you need to go to a salon and get a toner put in your hair then the color will hold better.

No hair holds color well. It just seems to last longer on non-blondes because they have a natural darker color to back up the parts of the dye that are fading.

There are color boosters that you can buy and use in the interim to maintain the color. ask your colorist

I wonder how old you are..sometimes when your hair is young and in great condition color wont stay long. You are using a permanent hair color right?

I would go to the hair salon they have a filler that could be put on your hair that would help the color stay. But if your hair is fine and too soft it still may not stay.

And if you are not using the right shampoos and conditioners for color treated hair they can strip your hair of the color as well..
